Safety Update

from Interim Rector and Wardens of St. Paul’s Indy

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love's sake. Amen.

- Compline Collect, The Book of Common Prayer (pg. 134)

Dear St. Paul’s Community,

After prayerful reflection and out of an abundance of care, the Vestry and the Rev. Devon Anderson (our Interim Rector) want to share information about a situation involving a former neighbor, Richard (“Rich”) Sackett, who previously lived across the street from the St. Paul’s Indy campus.

Over the past several months, Mr. Sackett’s behavior toward staff and volunteers has become increasingly erratic and, at times, verbally aggressive. While there has been no physical harm or threats, he has accessed the campus without permission and has responded with hostility when asked to leave. Throughout this period, we have approached Mr. Sackett with compassion and patience, seeking to de-escalate encounters and extend respect. However, it became clear that he was in distress and not open to help. Because the well-being of our community is a top priority, we followed appropriate procedures to formally trespass him from the campus.

We understand that Mr. Sackett no longer resides in the neighborhood and therefore has no reason to be on or around church property. That said, given the unpredictability of his behavior, we felt it was important to inform you in case he does return to the area. His photo is included below for reference.

If you see Mr. Sackett on campus or nearby, please do not approach him. Instead, please notify Devon, the wardens or a member of St. Paul’s Indy staff right away.

As we navigate this situation, we remember that each of us is made in the image of God, and all of us are in need of healing. Christ came into the world as a vulnerable child and lived among us as a healer and reconciler. Many of his miracles focused on restoring people to health and to community. In that spirit, let us give thanks for the safety and compassion of this parish and continue to pray for all who seek healing — including Mr. Sackett. While the support he needs goes beyond what our parish can provide, we hold hope that he finds the help he requires through appropriate channels.

We will continue to keep you informed if anything changes. In the meantime, please click below to reach out to Devon or the wardens with any questions or concerns.

Yours in Christ,

Devon, Jeff and Shane
