• About this CD
"The one who sings, prays twice" according St. Augustine of Hippo, an early Christian philosopher and author. Prayer is what this recording is about actual prayer texts or texts about prayer. Prayer has been a part of human kind since creation. The act of praying is the medium by which one speaks to the Creator of life and is an integral part of one's existence. Represented on this recording are: ancient prayers to the Virgin Mary heard in three of the Latin Motets by Howells; settings of the ancient psalms by 20th century composers Ned Rorem and Paul Bouman; the well known prayer for peace and servanthood of St. Francis; and the prayer, O hear us, Lord, by the Anglican theologian, John Donne. Prayer continues to be a part of our Anglican liturgy as seen in the anthems by William Harris, Anthony Piccolo, and Bruce Neswick. Lastly, and most importantly is the fact that hymns are prayers integral to our daily life. Through hymns we continue to speak to God with beautiful poetry by Charles Wesley, Edwin Hatch, Samuel Crossman, Brian A. Wren, and John E. Bowers. This recording took place at Sweeney Chapel of Christian Theological Seminary. The chapel is known for its lively acoustics and the combination of light, space, and texture. All combining to create a sense of quiet mystery.
