Brief Biography
In April of 2003, the Rev. Richard H. Winters became Rector of St. Paul's, having previously served as Rector of St. John's Episcopal Church in Saginaw, Michigan, an urban parish founded in 1851. Under his leadership St. Paul's is expanding its ministries and has embarked on an ambitious building project.
Rich has a passion for helping cultivate healthy and vital congregations. During his first five years as Rector of St. John's, average Sunday attendance increased 70%, quite a remarkable figure given that Saginaw is an economically distressed city with a rapidly declining population.
In the Diocese of Indianapolis, Rich is Chair of the Higher Education Commission, a member of the New Congregations Committee, an Examining Chaplain, a member of the Ecclesiastical Trial Court, and a former board member of Waycross Camp and Conference Center.
Rich's other ministry experience includes serving as Assistant Rector of St. David's, Glenview, Illinois, President of Cathedral Shelter of Chicago, and as a member of the Chapter of St. James Cathedral in Chicago where he chaired the Evangelism & Outreach Commission and taught Sunday School. Rich has been a Trustee of Seabury-Western Theological Seminary since 1998. Rich currently serves on the board of National Episcopal Health Ministries and the Anglican Theological Review. For eight years he was Trustee of the Seabury-Western Theological Seminary.
He has experience as a spiritual director and in leading Quiet Days and vestry retreats. Since 1994, Rich has been a member of the Fellowship of St. John the Evangelist. As a lawyer Rich was Law Clerk to the Honorable Gerald Bard Tjoflat of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and Associate Attorney at Winston & Strawn in Chicago. He was a volunteer attorney for Cathedral Shelter, the Howard Brown Clinic, and the AIDS Legal Council.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Duke University (A.B., Economics with Honors and Political Science, magna cum laude, 1983), Rich also earned a J.D. from Duke Law School (1986), where he was an Article Editor of the Duke Law Journal. At Seabury Seminary (M. Div. 1993), Rich received The H.N. Moss Book Award for Academic Achievement.
Rich is married to the former Margaret V. Mohr, and they have three daughters: Emily, Betsy and Molly.
