Sunday School Curriculum
Preschool & Elementary School Children
• The Early Years (3 year olds)
Early Years Class is for three-year-olds who are out of diapers. Bible stories, songs, artwork and play are order of the day. Children may either sit with their parents or go to the nursery for the beginning of the 9:00 a.m. service. They attend Kids' Word and then either go back to the Nursery or to Holy Communion with their parents in the church. The class meets at 10:15 a.m. on the second floor of the Parish Center.
• Preschool-2nd Grade
Two of our classes use Godly Play curriculum: the Preschool/Kindergarten class and the First & Second Grade class. In Godly Play, children enter the classroom ready to encounter sacred stories told with manipulative figures so that they may actually see and touch the story as well as hear the story.
The class routine follows the rhythm of our liturgy:
• We gather.
• We hear God's word.
• We respond to God's works through art, puzzles and stories.
• We give pray.
• We "feast."
• We are dismissed with a blessing.
• 3rd-6th Grades
These children will learn from the Episcopal Children's Curriculum, which is theme-based. In the fall, they begin with stories from the Hebrew Scriptures and in the winter do New Testament lessons. Springtime the lessons for 3rd and 4th graders are on worship and the Saints. Fifth and sixth grades study worship and Church history. Classes have engaging on-going class projects as well as individual work and materials to take home.
Journey to Adulthood: Spiritual Formation for Young People (6th-12th Grades)
This curriculum is widely used throughout the Episcopal Church as well as other denominations. The program has two guiding principles: 1) Manhood and womanhood are gifts from God. 2) Adulthood must be earned. The lessons are scripturally based, focusing on four areas of study: self, society, spirituality and sexuality.
• Rite 13 (6th-7th Grades)
These youth form the Rite 13 class of the Journey to Adulthood program. The name comes from the Liturgy that serves as a "rite of passage" when they turn 13 years old. Rite 13 is a two-year program, and during which the class focuses on building community. They do a lot of playing. The learning is focused on the foundations of our faith: Scripture and the Prayer Book in exploring topics such as being made in the image of God, prayer, making decisions, compassion and acts of mercy, sexual stereotyping, faith and trust.
• J2A (8th-9th Grades)
These young people study the areas of self, society, spirituality and sexuality with the lessons taking a practical approach, continuing to be based on scripture. The J2A class covers the six skills of active listening, negotiation, assertion, research and information management, partnership, and leadership. This J2A group takes a spiritual pilgrimage in the summer of 2011. To qualify for Pilgrimage, a young person must commit to the group with regular Sunday morning attendance as well as participation in fundraising and youth group activities.
• YAC (10th-12th Grades)
Young Adults in Church (YAC) teens focus on taking on leadership roles in the parish. Their Sunday morning classes focus on mission, ministry and beliefs under the mentorship of caring adults. They have recreational or social activities as the YAC, but also participate in the larger Youth Group.
